We all know that tobacco is harmful to health. Smoking cigarettes is harmful. Still, people smoke cigarettes and smoke out loud. Governments and social organizations continue to warn people about the harm of smoking, but people still smoke.
It is estimated that about one hundred million people smoke worldwide. Most of them know it's harmful to them, but they still smoke.

Why Do People Smoke?

In the BBC English radio program Inquiry, Sangeeta Bhaskar tried to find the answer to the same question and spoke to several experts. Professor Robert West teaches health psychology at the famous University of London University College. In his book on smoking, he told people that smoking is harmful, although he was addicted to it in college. He smoked cigarettes for about three years. But his girlfriend had a serious objection to this habit. Even though he stopped his girlfriend from being strict. However,  he quit smoking.

Professor Robert West says the way to quit cigarettes is 'girlfriend formula. If your girlfriend hates smoking, you can quickly eliminate this addiction. Professor West spent thirty years of his life with his friend. The cause of cigarette addiction is scientific, says Professor West.

Tobacco contains a chemical called nicotine. When you smoke cigarettes, the layers of your lungs take nicotine from the smoke. Within a few seconds, the nicotine reaches the nerves in your brain. With the effect of nicotine, our brain releases a hormone called dopamine, which makes us feel good.

Whenever the brain releases dopamine, we have a lot of fun. We've got a reward for something. It means the brain shows if you smoke, you feel that you have done an excellent job. The brain does not do this intentionally, but it does so because of the nicotine effect.

But soon, the brain becomes so addicted to nicotine that you repeatedly smoke cigarettes or cigars. This addiction is just like any drug addiction, such as heroin. Nicotine intoxication is so prevalent that it controls your behavior.

Professor Robert West researched some people with throat cancer to find out the effect of nicotine. The throat track of those people, which is connected to the lungs, had to be cut off. But these people were so addicted to nicotine that they only smoked cigarettes. The smoke would go straight into his stomach. It caused severe irritation. There was also a risk of cancer returning. But these tobacco addicts were not afraid of it.

Nicotine addiction is like heroin. Now heroin is banned worldwide, but tobacco use is not prohibited, and it is up to the people to decide whether to use tobacco. Nicotine found in tobacco controls the part of our brain through which we meditate and decide. When nicotine reaches the brain, it not only takes away our brain's ability to think but also stimulates our brain to smoke again and again.

The mind warns us too, but we ignore it. This is why ordinary people, including former US President Barack Obama, suffer from cigarette addiction. That means no matter how wise a human being is, nicotine intoxication overrides it.

The Reality Of Nicotine

According to Professor West, some of our genes are also responsible for our tobacco addiction.

About 70 to 80% of the genes in our body are the ones that push us toward smoking. Nicotine speeds up work, and it controls our ability to think. Cigarette-making companies make money from the same power of nicotine. They not only make us addicted to nicotine and make huge profits from it but also hide nicotine harm and damage.

This was revealed in the 1990s by a man in the US and Europe. His name is Dr. Jeffrey. Dr. Jeffrey is a biochemist and was associated with Brown & William, a major cigarette company in the nineties, where he received a large salary.

But while at the company, Dr. Jeffrey discovered that his company hides information about the damage caused by cigarette sales. They discovered that to increase nicotine's effect, the Brown & Williams Company combines hazardous chemicals, such as ammonia and comforters, into their cigarettes. Company officials knew this, but they were silent. When Dr. Jeffrey questioned, he was asked to remain silent. But he continued to raise questions within the company that resulted in Dr. Jeffrey being fired, and he was warned to keep his mouth shut.

Perhaps Dr. Jeffrey remained silent, but one day he saw officials of seven major cigarette companies in the United States appear before the US Parliament, saying that cigarettes do not harm.

It was a total lie. The officials of the cigarette companies were utterly lying. They also included officers from Dr. Jeffrey's old company, Brown & Williams.

Dr. Jeffrey realized that it would be very harmful if he didn't speak now. As a result, he exposed the conspiracy of the cigarette companies in front of the media, after which the cigarette companies recognized that tobacco was harmful to health and could endanger lives.

Cigarette companies were then instructed to issue legal warnings on the packet in the United States. Also, they were heavily taxed.

At the same time, many Western countries have banned smoking in public places. Also, many conditions were imposed on cigarette companies to protect people from the harm of cigarettes.

A Hollywood movie about Dr. Jeffrey's sensational revelations was also called The Insider. After that, they received death threats, which the government gave them secret guards.

Cigarette Companies Claim

Dr. Jeffrey Wigand says cigarette companies are powerful. After law enforcement in Western countries, these companies are now selling cigarettes in poorer and developing countries and trapping people unaware of its dangers. In many countries in Africa and Asia, cigarettes are sold with no legal warning.

Cigarette companies claim they do not force anyone to smoke; it's their choice. However, cigarette companies hide this danger from the public. People are used to it by first distributing cigarette cans for free, then they dance on the nicotine signal, and the cigarette companies make huge profits from addicted people.

But cigarette companies cannot be held solely responsible for this addiction, as it is your decision to smoke.
The question is, why do people smoke?

Why Cigarette Decision?

From childhood, Dr. Aldico, a psychiatrist at University College London, didn't understand why people smoked. His mother also smoked cigarettes.

Dr. Aldiko explains that most smoke cigarettes under social pressure. For example, some young people who smoke in college are considered 'cool.'

Dr. Aldiko says that most cigarette addicts often begin during education. While many people smoke in the office and watch their colleagues or bosses.

According to Dr. Aldiko, people deliberately start smoking. They use this drug to identify themselves, and then nicotine shows its effect, and people get addicted.

Gamble With Health

If people are aware of cigarettes and tobacco, why are they drawn to them? This is answered by Carl Lejuez of the University of Kansas, USA, who says drug addicts gamble with their health.

Mr. Carl says he has done a lot of research on cigarette lovers. His mother was also a chain smoker. He says people who smoke put their health at stake, and as the gambler becomes addicted to betting, Smokers have the same attitude.

Mr. Carl also did exciting research. They asked some people to fill the air with balloons. People who did not smoke carefully filled the air with spreading balloons, so they did not explode. But cigarette smokers didn't care for it, and their balloons exploded because of too much air. Carl says the experience proves that smokers are more prepared to take on risks and are unaware of their loss.

The Risk Seems Far Away

Carl says smokers risk their health because they feel the danger is far from over. They think smoking may cause some illnesses but may not.

The effect of nicotine is that we cannot reasonably decide not to smoke. And as each cigarette burns, the risk increases, and each cigarette rises. For many, cigarettes can be fatal, but even today, one billion people worldwide are smoking.

Are you not one of those people?
