Why Do Tears Come Out When We Cry?

Why do Tears Come Out When We Become Emotional

According to science, only human tears can emerge when they become emotional. There are two reasons for the tears.

  • Maybe he/she is too sad.
  • Maybe something went into her/his eyes. (Or perhaps he/she is lying because something went into the eyes).

If you are interested in science, then science can tell you if he or she is lying or if something went into your eyes! How? Let's find out.

Sadness, pain, or hurt makes us cry, but why? Tears come out when you get something in your eyes because your eyes want to clean out that dust/particle, but why tears in sadness or happiness?

How Many Types Of Human Tears?

Humans can shed three types of tears. Although they look similar to water but differ from each other. Three types of tears names are:

  1. Psychic Tears.
  2. Reflex Tears.
  3. Basal Tears.

Basal Tears

This tear occurs almost daily because the eyes need to be wet for normal function. If basal tears do not come out, our eyes can be damaged by blinking. Stopping this friction, the eyes make basal tears. The question is why this tear is not coming out of the eyes. Because there is a drainage system in the corner of the eyes, just like a hole in the sink.

What is basal tears? meaning of basal tears

Reflex Tears

This tear comes out because of stimulus-response. For example, if anything gets into the eyes, like dust particles or chilly powder. While eyes produce tears from lacrimal glands. Too many can't be handled by the eye's drainage system, which is why they come out of the eyes. Tears make up the lacrimal gland at the top of the eyes in our body.

Psychic Tears

Mainly tears are made from three things:
  1. Salt.
  2. Protein.
  3. Enzymes (antibacterial).

All three types of tears have different quantities of salt, proteins, and enzymes. Some have more salt and fewer proteins; some have more enzymes and fewer salts. More protein in tears comes out because of emotions (psychic tears). These proteins also have stressed hormones and painkillers. Yes! Tears because of feelings have a pain killer, which can relieve to fewer your pain and make you relax. There are anti-stress chemicals. Also, because of emotional tears, the brain's hypothalamus is involved. It is part of the brain that controls emotions.

We learned how many types of tears are, and they have different quantities of salt, proteins, and enzymes. It is easy to understand basal and reflex tears and why they come out, but why do they come out because of emotions?

According to evolution, human uses different body language to communicate. Like; a handshake, mock, winking. Maybe emotion's tears enroll themselves in one of these.

In the daily routine, if a person tells you he/she is sad (hurt), maybe you can't believe or be sympathetic, but you will think more if a person tells you his/her sadness by crying, but it is not only limited to crying.

You will find this more in children if a baby is hungry, needs sleeping, etc.; crying is the only response. For mothers, it is a vital sign for their crying children. Many mothers can judge whether their kid's crying is fake or real. The tear is an essential aspect of this. Sometimes baby just cries for attention, and usually, tears don't come out, but if a baby is really in pain or hungry, they mostly come out.

Baby Tears

If two girls ask for help, one looking sad and the second crying, there is more chance that you will help a crying girl. Because of an emotional level, tears can wake up our emotions, which are kind, helpful, and have good intentions. Usually, it is difficult for a human to bear that a person cries in front of him.

Other animals also have tears, but it is the only human whose tears come out because of emotions.

Tears In Happiness

Science doesn't know precisely why humans cry in happiness, but perhaps we shed our sad tears in joy. For example:

  • In a marriage, women cry (primarily Asian) not because they are starting a new chapter of life but maybe because they have ended their past life chapter.
  • Crying after graduation, not because of happiness, but because you are no part of the university now and will miss your friends.
  • You cry when you meet your loved ones because you have waited for them for so long.
