From infants to the elderly, people often burp after eating, but no one has ever tried to find out why this burp is taken and whether it is suitable for our health or whether it can also have disadvantages.
What Is Burping (Eructation, Belching)?
Usually, during eating, for talking, or for any other reason, air enters our digestive tract with food called out of the mouth through burping. In some people, burping after eating is part of their eating habits, while this process is sometimes caused by certain foods. Sometimes, excessive burping can be not only a habit but also a precursor to disease.
Technical Causes Of Burping
- Burps or belching can be begun by drinks containing carbon dioxide, such as soft drinks and beer, in which case the discharged gas is essentially carbon dioxide.
- Burping is usually caused by swallowing air when drinking or eating and consequently expelling it.
- Burping or belching connected with other signs such as nausea, heartburn, and dyspepsia may be a symptom of an ulcer or hiatal hernia and should be examined by a doctor.
- Diabetes medicines can cause burping, particularly at higher dosages.
- Other conditions of belching involve food allergy, esophageal reflux, gallbladder diseases, acid reflux disease, gastritis, and H. pylori.
Can Burping Be A Sign Of A Disease?
The human body is like a machine whose malfunction in any part can be manifested through various symptoms. Burping is not a disease, but it can be a symptom of some diseases.
According to a Harvard study, excessive burping can cause an infection of the digestive tract or be a sign of constipation. Also, people allergic to milk or milk products or lactose in milk may experience frequent or excessive burping after eating. Besides, experts say that sometimes the first sign of cancer in any part of the digestive tract can be repeated belching (excessive burping).
Which Foods Can Cause Excessive Burping?
Lentils/Pulses (Beans)
Inside pulses, which include chickpeas and red beans, there is a screw called raffinose, which causes gas in the stomach. Therefore, people who are already suffering from gas in the stomach should be careful in using such food. However, the importance of these foods to the body cannot be denied because their use can protect the body from the risk of diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.
Cauliflower
Cauliflower and other vegetables belonging to its tribe, including cabbage and broccoli. It is more likely to cause gas in the stomach due to refinances. By cooking such vegetables well, the effects of gas production can be stopped, and burping can be reduced.
Dairy Products
Fruits
Fruits are essential for the human body, but some fruits contain a sugar called sorbitol, which prevents them from being digested quickly and produces gas. These fruits include apples, cherries, peaches, dates, pears, etc. Eating them also increases belching.
Spicy Foods
Spicy foods are suitable for the tongue, but these foods influence the walls of the digestive tract, which increases the acidity in the stomach and produces more gas and belching.
Garlic
Garlic and onions contain an ingredient called allicin, which, when eaten raw, can speed up gas formation while cooking; these products can reduce their effects.
Fried Foods And Burping
Fried foods contain a large amount of fat and fat is the part of the diet that takes the longest time to digest, so its presence makes the food stay in the stomach longer and causes gas.
Manners Of Burping
Some societies and cultures consider burping acceptable in particular circumstances; in South Asia, it shows the host that the guest has enjoyed and appreciated the food and is complete.
In Islam, burping during a meal is acknowledged as bad manners as its voice can be awkward to someone. Also, burping causes bad breath, which is unacceptable. We should silence on burp, or at least try to do so.
